Even as an all-party meeting that was expected to take place on Wednesday to discuss pricing of sugar was cancelled, an association of UP sugar mills reached an agreement with farmers in the state.

As per the pact, UP farmers would get Rs 190-195 per quintal on sugarcane, about Rs 25 above the state-administered price (SAP) of Rs 165 per quintal.

Even as the farmers were asking for Rs 280 per quintal, it was expected that the pricing would be arrived at close to Rs 210 per quintal.

"The sugarcane pricing is a positive outcome for sugar companies," Investment Advisor SP Tulsian said. "The cost of producing sugar currently stands at Rs 27 per kg. Add the levy sugar cost of Rs 5 per kg and sugar mills make a margin of Rs 6 per kg."
