The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has issued the request for quotation (RFQ) for its first IT contract for application development services, reports CNBC-TV18 quoting sources. It is also being learnt that the authority is likely to issue two more RFQs by next month. The UID project, which will provide a unique identification number to the country's over one billion citizens, is being looked at with great interest by several national and multinational IT and Internet players as well. Forty-two vendors have submitted their bids for the unique id project, headed by former Infosys co-chairman Nandan Nilekani. The bids range between Rs 500 crore to Rs 725 crore, sources inform, adding that Wipro and HCL are among the lowest bidders, while Capgemini, Infosys , Polaris and IBM are among the highest bidders. "Education IT companies like Aptech and NIIT have also placed their bids." In November 2009, the global CEO of Yahoo! Inc, Carol Bartz, had offered Prime Minister Manmohan Singh help with the UID programme being put in place in the country. "The UID project involves a huge database. We, at Yahoo, have expertise in handling such huge amount of data. We met the Prime Minister today and discussed, among other things, how Yahoo can help the Government in the project," Bartz had said. However, Yahoo also said that it was not looking at the UID project for any commercial interest but to pay back to the nation where it has had a presence for so many years. Networking solutions company Cisco Systems was another player to evince interest in the project. The company had said, in November that it was in discussions for a possible role in the project. "We are in talks with Nilekani on how to help and the kind of role Cisco can play," Padmasree Warrior, Chief Technology Officer, Cisco Systems Inc, had said on the sidelines of the BangaloreIT.biz conference.
