The tariff war is hotting up. Two moves today by major operators, BSNL and Reliance have resulted in cutting of the roaming tariffs all the way down to zero.
The tariff war is hotting up. Two moves today by major operators, BSNL and Reliance have resulted in cutting off of the roaming tariffs all the way down to zero.
In a move that comes as aggressive as this, BSNL, the second largest GSM player, has cut roaming tariffs to zero for the first 300 minutes. The outgoing roaming tariff will be at Re 1 per minute as will be the incoming tariff post the 300 minutes.
The government has been toying with the idea of scrapping roaming rates altogether, but that is something that BSNL and MTNL have not been able to do, as that may have too much of an adverse impact on the financial efficiencies.
It's important to note that it is easier for a CDMA player to do this than for a GSM player, so all eyes will now be on Bharti, they will be left with no option, but to act.
On the lines of this move, one would expect the other major players Airtel, Hutch and Idea also to follow suit and cut down roaming rates drastically.
IT and Communications Minister A Raja expects private players to also match the PSU comapnies roaming rate cut. A comprehensive 3G policy is being worked on, which will be placed before the Parliament, he says.
