From the early 1970's, Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces has been recognized for its role in developing several of India's key tourist destinations including Kerala and Goa.   Continuing this tradition, Taj Hotels today announced its plans to widen its Kerala experience with the launch of a new hotel in the region. Taj Hotels is working in conjunction with the Kerala Government and Khanna Hotels to manage and operate a premium beach resort in Bekal (North Kerala). The proposed resort in Bekal will present this pristine beach location for the first time to leisure tourists.

Mr. Raymond N. Bickson, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, The Indian Hotels Company Limited, said: "We are delighted with the opportunity to widen our presence in Kerala.  The state presents a variety of experiences from the beaches to the backwaters and we are excited to offer the Taj experience in new destinations in Kerala. We are honored to partner with the Kerala Government and Khanna Hotels on the Bekal project.  Leisure and hospitality in this region is growing tremendously and it is important for the Taj Hotels to be present in key strategic locations in the state."

Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces currently operates 7 hotels / resorts in Kerala.  The new hotel will further strengthen its position as the leading hospitality chain in the region.  The first Taj Hotel, the Taj Malabar, Cochin was launched in 1986.

The proposed Beach Resort project in Bekal will be developed on a 24-acre site, with a beachfront, backwater inlet and small natural lagoon. The resort will be an eco-friendly, villa style development with architectural elements drawn from elements of local design.  Landscaping will form one of the most important elements of this resort, as it is spread over a large area and has the advantage of having natural features within its area. The resort will be operated under the Taj Leisure Hotels brand.
