Symantec Corporation (Nasdaq: SYMC) introduced  Veritas  Server  Foundation,  a product family consisting of Veritas   Configuration   Manager   and   Veritas  Provisioning  Manager   complemented  by new features in Veritas Cluster Server.  Veritas Server Foundation  gives enterprise customers the ability to discover in detail what is running on all the servers in their data center, actively manage and   administer   those  servers,  and  ensure  that  mission  critical applications running on those servers are always available.

"In order for IT administrators to gain control of the data center, they need  visibility  into  what  they  have,  an  understanding  of  how it interrelates,  and  assurance  that  it  is  highly available.  Adding configuration  management  to  clustering  is  a logical move to improve cluster reliability and manageability as well as enable dynamic resource dependency  grouping," said Donna Scott, VP and Distinguished Analyst of Gartner,  Inc.  "Additionally,  adding  server provisioning to the suite provides  the foundation to enable dynamic scaling in order to meet ever changing   business   demand,   and  thus,  improve  cost  and  resource utilization."

Veritas Server Foundation Delivers Visibility

Server  Foundation  includes  Veritas  Configuration  Manager  (formerly Relicore   Clarity),   recently   acquired   by  Symantec,  which  helps administrators  comprehensively  understand  what is running in the data center,  and  track  how  it's  changing.  Veritas Configuration Manager  discovers  all  the servers and applications in the data center, as well as  their  configurations and  the  dependencies between them.  It then tracks   any   changes  to  these  configurations  and  dependencies  in real-time,   and  can  compare  current  configurations  to  established standards to ensure internal and external compliance.

"It's  simply  impossible  to  effectively  run a data center unless you understand  what  is  actually  in  it,"  said  Vishal  Dhupar, managing director,  Symantec  India.  "With the new Veritas Server Foundation, we are giving customers the unique capability to understand exactly what is in their server and application environment in real time ? and the power to  manage  and  optimize  that environment, and to ensure their mission critical applications are always available, no matter what."

Veritas Server Foundation Delivers Control

With  Veritas  Provisioning  Manager  (formerly OpForce), Veritas Server Foundation lowers labor costs and reduces error rates by automating many common,  routine  tasks  such  as provisioning servers and applications, deploying patches, and rolling out new software packages ? all through a centralized console.

Veritas  Provisioning  Manager  speeds  operating system and application deployment,  providing  IT  with  a  cost-effective  solution  to ensure consistent   deployments,   while   streamlining   management.   Veritas Provisioning Manager enables IT to automatically discover new bare metal or  active  servers,  install  operating  systems,  deploy and configure applications,  and  modify network settings.  Administrators can quickly deploy servers, applications and patches in compliance with IT standards as  well as define and schedule automated jobs and manage servers from a central  location.   Additionally, administrators can quickly and easily address   configuration   issues  identified  by  Veritas  Configuration Manager.

Veritas Server Foundation Delivers Availability

Veritas  Server  Foundation  includes  new  features  in Veritas Cluster Server  designed  to reduce both planned and unplanned downtime, whether due  to  hardware  failures,  data  center  wide  disasters,  or  server maintenance, by automating local and wide area application failover.

The new Veritas Cluster Server 5.0 enables customers to monitor, manage, and report on multiple local and remote clusters from a single web-based console.  In addition, Cluster Server 5.0 incorporates a feature called Fire  Drill  that  allows organizations to easily perform non-disruptive testing  of  disaster  recovery  (DR)  failovers  to ensure reliability.

Until  now,  DR  testing  required  risky  and  time-intensive  tests on production  systems.  As a result, most IT organizations have not tested their  DR  environment  adequately,  which leads to significant exposure that  in  the  event  of  a  disaster, those systems will not perform as intended.   The  Fire  Drill feature automates the process of DR testing and  allows  administrators  to  verify  that  their DR plans will work, without affecting production systems.

In addition to Veritas Cluster Server, Veritas Configuration Manager can also  contribute  to reducing downtime by preventing configuration drift that   would   otherwise  prevent  a  failover  from  being  successful.

Configuration   Manager   also  reduces  planned  downtime  by  creating dependency maps that help organizations understand the impact of changes before they are made.

Services for Veritas Server Foundation

Symantec  Global  Services  provides  a  broad  portfolio  of consulting services  that  allow  customers  to  take full advantage of the Veritas Server  Foundation  product  family,  to  enhance server and application management,  improve  application  availability,  and address server and

application-related  IT  risks.   Symantec's high availability experts offer  comprehensive availability  assessments, design, implementation, and   expert   on-site   services   to   help   customers   ensure  that mission-critical  applications are running and server configurations are up-to-date  and consistent with established standards.  More information on Symantec service     offerings can be found at www.symantec.com/consulting .

Product Availability

Veritas  Provisioning  Manager 4.1 and Veritas Configuration Manager 5.0 are generally available now.  Veritas Cluster Server 5.0 is scheduled to be  generally  available  in  calendar Q3, 2006.  Products are available through  Symantec's  direct  sales force, enterprise VAR channel, system integrators and select OEM partners.
