Still too premature to comment on price of new car: Bajaj

Talking to CNBC-TV18 about their newly unveiled small car, Rajiv Bajaj, MD, Bajaj Auto said they hope to create a new space based on certain differentiated technology, including a new engine concept. On the price range, he said that it was still to premature to give a definite price. Bajaj said that the car would roll out in a 2-4 year time frame.

Excerpts of CNBC-TV18's exclusive interview with Rajiv Bajaj:

Q: Tell us about the car, is it going to be something like the Rs 1-lakh car? If not, then what is going to be the USP of this small car?

A: Our focus is not on the small car, it's on a big idea. The big idea is to create a new space in what we call the light four-wheel transportation, whether of goods or passengers. Today we have shown not just the car but also the light truck.

The new space we hope to create is based on certain differentiated technology that we are developing. If this technology is proven over the next year or so, I think we will have a very new platform of a very modern four-wheeler.

It would be inappropriate to say that it would be priced at Rs 1 lakh or Rs 2 lakhs or anywhere in between, because it is still too premature. Also, in any case, that's not the centre of gravity of our project. For us what is important is the performance and then the price.

Q: How are you going to position the car, do you think that this would be a more fuel efficient car than the rest of them. Also the other details of the car, what engine would it sport and things like that?
