Sterling Biotech Acquires Torrent Gujarat Biotech

Sterling Biotech Limited, one of the world's largest manufacturer of Pharmaceutical Gelatin, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to purchase the manufacturing facility of Torrent Gujarat Biotech Ltd as an asset sale for Rs. 55 crores in an all cash deal.

 

The plant of Torrent Gujarat Biotech Ltd is located at Masar, Dist. Baroda, Gujarat. The transaction is subject to both the parties receiving necessary approvals / consents under applicable laws.

 

Sterling Biotech Limited will use the facility to manufacture specialized gelatins derivatives such as Fish Gelatin, Hydrolyzed Gelatin and fermentation-based nutraceuticals such as Co-Enzyme Q 10. 

 

These gelatin derivatives and nutraceuticals have been developed by Sterling for its existing customers in western world, which are large Pharmaceutical and Nutraceuticals companies including Fortune 500 Companies. 

 

Hydrolysed Gelatine

 

Hydrolysed gelatine is a type of protein where the amino acid chains are broken and freed through acids, enzymes, and fermentation processes. Similar to other gelatine products, hydrolysed gelatine has multiple applications in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.

 

The annual world demand for hydrolysed protein is about 1.1 million tonnes. Pacific Basin countries accounted for 70% of the global market, Europe and North America together accounted for 15%, and South America made up the rest.

 

Fish Gelatine

 

Sterling's another new product is fish gelatin, which is extracted commercially from the skins of deepwater fish such as cod, haddock, pollock, tuna, and also from local salt fish and frozen fish processors. The total fish production in India was 2.8 million tonnes in 2003, providing an excellent source of raw material for fish gelatin. The uniqueness of fish gelatin lies in the amino acids content of the Gelatin.

 

Fish gelatin has a wide range of applications in, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries. Fish gelatin is a premium product due to presence of omega acids in it and is a preferred product in specialized applications in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries Fish gelatin has seen a sharp growth due to wide range of applications.

Co-Q10 is the highest growing nutraceutical in the whole world because of its ability to prevent Cardio-Vascular diseases, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's. The market for Co-Q10 is growing at more than 50% p.a. and is controlled mainly by few Japanese players. Sterling plans to emerge as significant global player in this segment.
