Skoch Consultancy Services a leading market analysis and strategy consulting firm today announced the winners of its first "The World Is Open Awards".   Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open source solutions was the presenting sponsor for these awards. The first of the annual awards set up to recognize the most impactful open source technology implementations in the country received 163 nominations and the winners include 24 open source technology projects implemented across the country (the names of the winners are attached in the addendum). Dr. B. K. Gairola, Director General, National Informatics Centre was awarded as the "Open Source Evangelist of the Year"

 

The projects nominated include governance, banking, financial services, telecom, healthcare, education and infrastructure amongst others. The selection of the winners was determined by an independent jury comprising of eminent industry personalities headed by Dr Deepak Phatak, Subharao M. Nilekani Chair Professor & Head Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology, IIT Bombay, while the entire process of nominations, submission and evaluation was audited by Skoch Consultancy.

 

"The World is Open awards showcase IT projects based on Open Source technologies as well as projects incorporating Open Source components. We have received 39% of the nominations from Government, 10% from Banking & Financial Services, 4% from Education and balance 42% from other sectors which included Telecom, healthcare, infrastructure, and services. The projects were adjudged on several parameters including effectiveness in delivering project objectives, innovation, open standards, relevance, scalability and flexibility." explains Sameer Kochhar, Chief Editor & CEO, Skoch Consultancy Services.

 

The awards were presented by Mr Gery Messer, President, Asia Pacific/Japan, Red Hat Asia Pacific and Dr Deepak Phatak,  Subharao M. Nilekani Chair Professor  & Head Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology, IIT Bombay at a ceremony held in New Delhi. Mr Nandu Pradhan, President & Managing Director Red Hat India was also present on the occasion.

 

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Dr Deepak Phatak, Subharao M. Nilekani Chair Professor  & Head Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology, IIT Bombay said, "For a country like India, open source is emerging as a viable alternative to proprietary technologies. Academic institutions have pioneered the use of open source in R&D projects and IIT Bombay has built an Affordable Solutions Laboratory around open source software. It is therefore heartening to see open source software become mainstream and these awards are recognition of that."
