The government's rice procurement from farmers has come in a tad lower this year. It has fallen short of its procurement target of 29-30 million tonne by 2%. It is hopeful though of buying more rice.
The government had raised its output estimates in December. There have been reports of strong demand from Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia and the US. FY10 exports have been estimated at over 21 lakh tonne.
Jyotiraditya Scindia, the junior trade minister, told Parliament that there was no proposal to lift a ban on non-basmati rice exports, which have been clamped down since October 2007. The country exported basmati rice worth Rs 62.01 billion between April and September 2009, Scindia said.
