Nobel Laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Founder & MD, Grameen Bank, Bangladesh was bestowed with the first 'Sakaal Person of the Year' Award at the hands of Honourable Shri Sharad Pawar, Union Minister for Agriculture here today at a glittering ceremony attended by the who's-who of business and industry. The 'Sakaal Person of the Year' Award comprising a citation and a cash component of Rs.10 Lakh, has been instituted by the esteemed Sakaal group which has among its brands, the prestigious and highly respected Marathi newspaper ' Sakal ', the English daily 'Maharashtra Herald' and Agrowon, the only agro-focused daily newspaper in India. Sakaal Group believes that individuals in different parts of the world who are already leaving their stamp on the global canvas by making significant contribution in their chosen field as social work, education, science, technology, culture, business, governance and so on have become torch-bearers for the global community because of the stupendous latent power their contribution holds. This 'thought leadership', translated into path-breaking initiatives of various kinds, shall eventually shape the face of the global community. The awarded each year will be selected based on the work done by him / her that has made a significant contribution to humanity thus bringing about a change and creating a paradigm shift in society. The work could be in the field of social work, community upliftment, environment concern, literature, the arts, crafts, culture, science technology, business and even politics and corporate governance. The award will cut across political, geographical, regional and religious barriers and will be given only to the most deserving person. The Sakaal Group has always been committed to social causes and has tried in its own way to make a difference to society and bring about transformation through its publications as well as social initiatives.
