The SAARC Car Rally reached Pokhra in Nepal from Siliguri in the hill districts of West Bengal on its 9th day today. It was the longest distance covered by the Rally in a day, over 600 kms of varying terrain, past wheat fields, mango groves and bamboo plantations and hilly areas.

Earlier in the day, the Rally crossed the India-Nepal border at Kakarbhitta on the Nepalese side. The Minister for Education of the Government of Nepal, Mr Mangal Sidhi Manandhar had especially traveled from the capital, Kathmandu, to welcome the Rally at this border town. He was joined by the Mayor of Kakarbhitta and other senior officials of the local administration.

The previous day, the Rally was flagged off at Guwahati by Tarun Gogoi, Chief Minister of Assam, amid a special cultural programme, army and police bands and hundreds of cheering schoolchildren. Even the heavy rain that lashed the city just before the programme started could not dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of the participants or the crowds, who lined the roads to cheer the rally as it rolled out of the Judges Field ground in Guwahati on its way to Siliguri..

The Chief Minister expressed the hope that the Rally would help to further strengthen ties and connect the people of the South Asian region, who shared a common culture and history.

While at Guwahati, the rally participants were treated to a cultural extravaganza at the Shrimant Sankaradeva Kalakshetra. After a visit to the museum, songs and dances from all the seven north- eastern states were performed for the participants to get a feel of the local culture and traditions. For most of the participants, it was their first exposure to the rich culture and heritage of Assam and the other north-eastern states and they enjoyed every moment of it. The Rally will continue to Kathmandu tomorrow.
