Royal Enfield riding carefully
A court injunction prevented TVS from selling its model Flame, following a protracted patent battle with Bajaj on an engine technology. That decision has prompted another two-wheeler maker Royal Enfield to play safe, reports CNBC-TV18.

Legendary bike maker Royal Enfield is close to launching its all-new engine that comes after decades. The new 500cc engine, slated to debut during the April-June quarter, is the first engine of the company that will have an integrated gearbox. Another feature that is getting more importance currently is the twin spark plug technology.
That is where Royal Enfield is playing safe. Royal Enfield is learnt to be now discussing with its legal counsel if its engine technology infringes upon the twin spark plug patent held by Bajaj Auto .
"The company is more focused on developing a new engine platform. The major difference is its integrated gearbox and the electronic fuel injection. It is a lean burn engine that will initially be used for exports in a new model. We are not concerned about one spark plug or two spark plugs," said RL Ravichandran, CEO, Royal Enfield.
So, even though there are concerns on not infringing patents, Royal Enfield says the new engine has been targeted at export markets like UK and Germany, where new emission norms have kicked in. It is also preparing for the domestic market where new norms will be implemented by 2010.
Royal Enfield, whose volumes are climbing a growth path in an otherwise dull market, would be working hard to avoid getting into any controversy, as the new engine platform will be crucial in taking the Royal Enfield legacy forward.
