Rising cement prices have led to a thriving cement adulteration racket.
This nondescript hutment was till yesterday a hub of a growing scam. This is where simple hardened cement, which is not fit for use, was crushed and mixed with branded cement. It was then resealed in branded packets ready to be sold to the unsuspecting retail customers. Each of the cement bags that left this shack would have about 10% of adulteration. Enough to make the foundation of a dream house weak. With the incidents of buildings collapse on a rise, the government is now worried.
Ashok Chavan, Minister for Industriesand Mining, Maharashtra said, "This is a serious matter and needs to be dealt with immediately. I've asked the police to take cognisance and register an FIR if necessary."
In the past one year, cement prices have risen by more than 30%. Rising prices coupled with shortage of cement availability has helped in rapid increase of such frauds.
Inside this little dungeon, contaminated cement was packed and sealed in bags. It was difficult to differentiate between fake and original because the cement was put back in the original branded cement bags.
