Ranbaxy to hive off discovery and research arm
A new lease of life for Ranbaxy's discovery research arm is on the cards. Ranbaxy, which has 1200 scientists working in different areas of pharmaceutical research is considering several funding options for its discovery research arm.
After Dr Reddy's, Sun Pharma and Nicholas Piramal, Ranbaxy is all set to hive off its discovery research division. A new lease of life for Ranbaxy's discovery research arm is on the cards. Ranbaxy, which has 1200 scientists working in different areas of pharmaceutical research is considering several funding options for its discovery research arm. Malvinder Singh, MD and CEO, Ranbaxy said, "Research is integral to growth. We are consiering series of different structures.
Ranbaxy's discovery research wing spreads to a wide range of therapies. These include infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, inflammatory diseases and oncology. Ranbaxy's novel anti-malarial compound is currently undergoing global phase two clinical trials.
Ranbaxy also has an on-going collaboration with British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline.
Analysts say Ranbaxy may de-merge its research wing or partner with private equity investors for funding. One of the options could also be to partner with more multinational companies and benefit from their world class intellectual property.
