Specialty chemicals company LANXESS AG is to increase its prices significantly for all its phosphorus compounds. This measure is a result of the considerable rise in the cost of the raw material phosphorus. The Peoples’ Republic of China, which has some 80 percent of the world’s phosphorus reserves, has increased its export tax for phosphorus from 20 to 120 percent effective May 20. “This sixfold increase directly affects phosphorus prices globally and forces us to adapt our prices in line with the amount of phosphorus used in the respective application,” says Dr. Oliver Vollmer, marketing manager in the Phosphorus Chemicals business line in the Functional Chemicals business unit.
Phosphorus compounds are nowadays an essential component in many chemical and technical processes. LANXESS offers a broad range of products based on phosphorus, such as synthesis chemicals, corrosion inhibitors, extraction agents, flame retardants, antifoams and solvents for a wide range of applications.
The Functional Chemicals business unit belongs to the Performance Chemicals business unit, which achieved total sales in fiscal 2007 of EUR 1,970 million.
