Engineering  students  of  SGGS  Institute  of  Engineering  & Technology, Nanded  are all  geared  up  to  experience  a  world-class  opportunity  that will simulate re al-world engineering design projects and their related challenges.

SAE India announced Baja SAEINDIA 2007 to be held at NATRAX (National Automotive Test Tracks), the Automotive Proving Grounds coming up under NATRIP at Pithampur near Indore:

An event that will task Indian engineering students to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe punishment of rough terrain. The Baja, pronounced as Baha, is modeled on a globally popular student competition Mini-Baja initiated by SAE International (Society of Automotive Engineers), USA.

The Baja competition, which is to be held for the first time in India from 21st  to 23rd Dec 2007,is organized under the guidance of The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAEINDIA) and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), an Automotive Regulatory Authority of India. The main sponsors of Baja so far are J K Tyres , ITW, Ford, AVTEC, M&M and Lombardini.

Dr. Pawan Goenka, President of the three institutions  viz.  SAEINDIA, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.  and ARAI, supported the idea of organizing this  Baja Event in India. The competition consists of a total of 1000 points spread across different static tests and dynamic tests such as mechanical design, engineering & sales presentation, Max. speed, accelerat ion, hill climbing, pulling event, maneuverability and finally 4 hours of endurance run.

Details of this competition are available at the website www.bajasaeindia.or g . 52 Engineering College Teams from all over India had registered online and finally 27 teams were short listed based on strict evaluation criteria. SGGS Institute of Engineering & Technology, Nanded is one of  the  27  selected  teams.  The  Phoenix  team  sponsored  b  Bharat Forge Limited   has completed th e planning & design stage and  is now busy  fabricating the vehicle based on the Rulebook posted on the website. The power train being used by the Team is an air-cooled 9 HP Lombardini petrol engine with M&M transmission.

The progress of the Team was tod ay reviewed at the college campus by the Convener of the Baja Event, Dr. Kamal Vora, Sr. Asst. Director at ARAI and Mr. Behram Dhabhar, G.M. (R&D) of M&M, along with the sponsor, Mr. Sunil Kode, Associate Vice President - HR, Bharat Forge.

Dr. Vora is a firm supporter of this out-o f-classroom engineering education, which will help many prospective engineers and other developing students to learn from hands-on experience and to grow from one of the most exciting and educational opportunities of their lifetime. Mr. Dhabhar is the Head of the Baja Technical Committee and a major source of inspiration & energy booster for the students.

Mr B N Kalyani, Chairman & Managing Director said that "Product innovation today, plays a critical role in the automotive industry. Gone are the days, when product cost, quality and time-to-market were sufficient to gain market advantage. Competitions such as the BAJA SAE , that  focus  on  design,  help  in  enlarging  and  enhancing  India's  growing  pool  of  skilled engineers.  They  provide  the  passion,  realistic  challenge  and  once  in  a  life  time  learning opportunity to these engineers".

The  Kalyani  Group  is  extremely  happy  to  provide  this  world-class learning opportunity to students of SGGS Institute of Engineering & Technology, Nanded, which otherwise is generally provided to IIT's, Metro Colleges and colleges across the world , he added".

The Director, Dr. Sontakke T R, SGGS Institute of Engineering & Technology, Nanded said, "Accepting All Terrain Vehicle design challenge and developing it by an interdisciplinary group of  students  without  students  from  automobile  branch  facilitates  the  SGGS  Institute  of Engineering & Technology to produce excellent professionals of tomorrow." The Team Leader, Suryavanshi Santosh added, "The competition has provided us an unique opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary group; we are working hard, hope we succeed in fulfilling the dream of finally coming up with a competitive vehicle"

Baja endeavors to inculcate and harness talent to augment design  and engineering skills of the engineering students. The goal of this competition is to provide these students a world - class  platform  to  showcase their  talent  and  potential,  not  only  in  terms  of  design  and  engineering skills, but also assess their capability for teamwork, entrepreneurship, leadership and  management  skills.  This  will  give  to  the  engineers  of  tomorrow,  the  taste  of  the challenges they will face in the industry.

In continuation with Vision INDIA 2020, SAEINDIA has a dream to brand India as an international automotive hub, not only in the field of manufacturing but also in R&D and innovation. "PHOENIX" team members, faculty advisors and the institute (SGGSIE & T, Nanded) specially thank Honorable Shri Baba Kalyani, Chairman, Bharat Forge Limited, Pune for supporting and motivating the team by way of team adoption and sponsorship.
