Auction to take place at 7:30 pm on Saturday 9 September 2006 at Taj Mahal Palace & Towers, Mumbai

Osian's-Connoisseurs of Art presents the second in its Forty Masterpieces series of Auctions, first held in March 2003, which brings together an incredible range of the finest paintings of the Great Masters of Indian Contemporary Art. The forty lots feature a wide spectrum of Masterpieces from the early 1890's to works as recent as 2001. (Please refer to the enclosed CD for details of some of the works featured in the Auction.)

HIGHLIGHTS

o   Pioneer of the Indian Modern Art movement Raja Ravi Varma's oil on canvas titled 'Shiva & Kamdeva' is dated back to the early 1890s.  Varma's work, a National Art Treasure, depicts one of the important stories of Indian Mythology.

o    V.S. Gaitonde's 'Untitled' work dated 1948 is one of the earliest high quality works created just after he had passed out from J. J. School of Art. Unlike his usual abstract works, this gouache on paper work is figurative. After 1997, this is Gaitonde's first pre-1950 gouache on paper work to be auctioned.

o    Shanti Dave's portrayal of Uttarayan or the Kite festival in his 'Untitled' work on plywood is a celebratory and colourful reflection of his individual self dated 1954.

o   A 1957 work by Akbar Padamsee from the Horizon series titled 'Horizon IV' is a brilliant and rare work of art. The physical concreteness is highlighted beautifully in the work which is in excellent condition.

o    Two works of S.H. Raza titled 'Foret Noir' and 'Bindu' are also featured in the Auction. While the former is an aesthetically appealing abstract work from 1961, the latter is one of the early Bindu-Germination combination works dated 1991.

o    F.N. Souza's work from the time he spent in England is depicted beautifully in the 1961 'Landscape in Red (Hampstead)'. Another work of the artist is the 'Tribal Woman' which combines the influence of Indian classical sculpture with elements of primitive art. This oil on board 1950 is a very rare painting of museum-quality.

o    Ramkumar's silence is captured magnificently in his work 'Varanasi Series'. The artist views Varanasi as not only a city but also a culture & civilization in decline. This series has always commanded the highest prices.

o    A rare 1965 painting by M.F. Husain titled 'Rape of Roccoco' in excellent condition previously exhibited at the Sao Paulo Biennale. The biennale is the second oldest exhibition which was founded to promote contemporary art in Brazil.

o    The most famous 'Conflict Series' by Prokash Karmakar evokes feelings of agony and turmoil. Segmented like jigsaw puzzles the work created in 1971 conveys a sense of horror and pain.

o     K.G. Subramanyan's 'Terrace' paintings are an extension of the interior series, an extension of the everyday space into what the oriental tradition sees as the lover's space. This is the finest oil on canvas painting by K.G. Subramanyan ever to be auctioned.

o    Bikash Bhattacharjee's 'Boy from Simla' portrays a boy standing against a dramatic bare tree in a snow-clad landscape. This 1982 work is a powerful expression of the child as a link to the primeval unity with mysterious nature.

o    Rameshwar Broota's technique of using a sharp knife to give a luminous look to his work is one that he has perfected over the years. In his work 'Metamorphosis (II)' dated 1984 he has once again used the technique to portraying the muscular male body.

Neville Tuli, Chairman - Osian's Connoisseurs of Art says, "This auction compiles works from the rarest periods of the artists' career. Many works which have not been put up for auction before will create genuine excitement for the collectors and I am quite certain many new price thresholds will be broken once again."
