CNBC-TV18 learns that the Power Ministry has requested the Oil Ministry for 12 mmscmd of gas for NTPC 's Kawas and Gandhar plants at USD 2.34 per mmbtu.

Government intervention is seen as a necessity for gas allocation for NTPC.

According to sources, the Power Ministry told the Oil Ministry that the allocation would enable NTPC to start construction of plants.

The expansion of these two plants has been pending since 2005. The gas allocation to the plants will add 2600 megawatts of power by March 2012.
