BlackBerry users can breathe easy. The government is not looking at banning the service in light of security concerns raised by the Home Ministry. CNBC-TV18's Sandeep Gurumurthi reports that even state-owned BSNL is gearing up for a BlackBerry launch.
Around 5 lakh users are hooked on to the BlackBerry. They can finally heave a sigh of relief as security concerns will not lead to a blackout. Telecom Secretary S Behura says the Home Ministry's concern of 'lawful interception' can be addressed through dialogue. Operators like Bharti , Vodafone, Reliance and RIM (the company that offers BlackBerry service) are in dialogue with both security agencies and officials of the DoT.
"There is no question of a ban at this point," said S Behura.
Security concerns don't seem to bother PSU giant BSNL either.
"We are planning to offer BlackBerry services within a month," said SD Saxena, Director-Finance, BSNL.
But the Tatas may not take this lying down. After all, their request to offer the same service was turned down by the government on security grounds.
"I am not sure what BSNL is up to. But surely, we will seek a level playing field," said Anil Sardana, MD, Tata Tele .
A compromise solution will be worked out assure sources in DoT. One option could be to ask RIM and service providers to create a mirror image of all emails and data sent.
