Nike launches innovative footwear for cricketers

Nike today announced the launch of its iconic cricket shoe- the Air Zoom Yorker created exclusively for fast bowlers. At the launch function at ITC Grand Central in Mumbai international fast bowlers - Shane Bond and S. Sreesanth were present while this cutting edge innovation was unveiled.

 

The Air Zoom Yorker is a technically superior product, designed to give bowlers an extra edge allowing them to enhance their on-field performance. Nearly half the weight and much more durable than the standard cricket shoe available today, the Air Zoom Yorker represents the pinnacle of performance in a cricket product.

 

Increased durability, superior touch and feel and less water retention are some of the key features that set this shoe apart. In addition, Air Zoom Yorker is re-enforced with the Zoom Air cushioning at the heel and forefront to reduce cleat pressure and increase responsive cushioning.

 

The Air Zoom Yorker has been designed on a unique last made specifically for cricket. This new last has been contoured so that the resulting shoe naturally supports the foot's arch and holds the foot in place, keeping the bowler from slipping forward and helping to protect his toes from being jammed into the front of the shoe.

 

Speaking on the occasion of the launch, Chris Cook, Senior Developer at Nike Inc. said, "Nike's commitment to provide innovative performance enhancing products for its athletes and the game of cricket has ensured that these shoes have been designed and introduced after a high degree of research spanning different cricket playing countries. Our research spanned many keys areas such as comfort, cushioning, flexibility, traction, stability and shoe weight." 

 

According to Cook, biomechanical studies on bowling and batting action, conducted at Nike's World class research facility (Nike Sports Research Lab) in Beaverton, have also been incorporated in the design of the shoe.

 

The wear testing process was also conducted in different cricket playing countries where cricket players at different levels (state, national and international) provided feedback and confirmed the superiority of design over an 18 month period.

 

Also available in this series is the Air Zoom Opener - a similar performance innovation for batsmen. Further Nike is also introducing a range of performance apparel and accessories, including Indian cricket replica jerseys, training gear, kit bags, backpacks etc. designed exclusively for cricket.

 

By the end of this year, Nike will introduce other footwear styles that are for the authentic cricket aspirant.

 

Air Zoom Yorker and Opener will be available in the Indian market by September 15, 2006.
