Nestlé’s milk plant puts Punjab on world dairy map

One-lakh farmers producing 10 lakh liters of milk everyday- Nestlé 's Moga milk plant has put Punjab on the world dairy map.  Nestlé's milk district model has changed the lives of farmers and boosted the company's bottomline too

 

 

 A small township in Punjab, Moga today is on the World Dairy Map. Moga was Nestlé's first milk district in Asia and today Moga produces over 10 lakh liters of milk everyday and that's twice the amount produced by the rest of Punjab put together.

 

 

In 1961, when Nestle opened its first and largest factory in India, it managed to source only about 500 liters of Milk on the first day. But today Moga has a different tale to tell. Apart from providing farmers with training and advice on dairy farm practices, Nestle has established an efficient Milk collection system by installing chilling centers and collection points.

 

Jintender Singh for instance is just one of the one lakh farmers in Moga who sells milk daily to Nestle. He started with two cows in 1996 and with Nestlé's financial and technical support, today owns 78 cows and sells over 1000 liters of milk everyday.

 

 

"I took a loan from the bank and Nestle and that helped us prosper. Today I save more than Rs 30,000 per month" says Jitender Singh

 

 

Nestlé's Milk district model has been successfully implemented in countries like UK, Germany and Spain, before it traveled to India.

 

Milk products today contribute to about 45% of Nestle India's portfolio. Together Nestlé's plant in Haryana and Moga produce over 1 lakh tons of milk products annually

 

Amul, the largest dairy player in the country, has a base of about 25 lakh dairy farmers and procures over 70 lakh liters of milk everyday. India is the world's largest milk producing nation and its dairy market today is worth Rs 2 lakh 50 crore. Corporate dairy initiatives like this are adding to the level-of India's milk produce and socio-economic development.
