Microsoft announces USD 200000 prize money for Imagine Cup

Microsoft Corporation today announced that registrations are now open for Imagine Cup 2008, the world's biggest student technology competition. The contest, now in its sixth consecutive year, is held annually by Microsoft to help students from across the world showcase their software development skills. The contest empowers students to apply their creativity, knowledge and technical abilities towards making the world a better place through technology, and develop applications which are relevant in today's context. In keeping with this endeavour, the theme for IC 2008 is 'Imagine a world where technology enables a sustainable environment'. The total prize money to be won at IC 2008 is US$ 200,000 (approximately Rs. 80,00,000), of which USD 15,000 (approximately Rs. 6,00,000) is allocated for the software design category alone. The first round for the software design contest closes on January 15, 2007. Interested students can register at https://imaginecup.com/Registration/Default.aspx .

 

Imagine Cup 2007 saw the highest number of students - over 100,000 from nearly every country - participating in the competition so far, Announcing Imagine Cup 2008, Tarun Gulati, General Manager - Developer and Platform Evangelism, Microsoft India said, "Imagine Cup is a platform for the convergence of technology talent from across the world. It is designed to empower the student community, by providing them with the relevant skills and latest tools to face real world challenges. We believe that the youth of today can bring a new, innovative aspect to solving the world's problems - and  environment sustainability is the key issue facing the world at large, and the younger generation in particular right now".

 

Imagine Cup 2008 will include nine categories - Software Design , Embedded Development , Game Development , Project Hoshimi , IT Challenge , Algorithm , Photography , Short Film , and Interface Design . The India Finals for the Software Design contest will take place in Bangalore on April 25, 2008, where the teams shall be judged by an eminent panel consisting of experts from the industry, academia and venture capitalists. The worldwide finals will be held in Paris (France) in the first week of July.
