The second methane gas plant in Jharkhand has started functioning at Talaspar village in Hazaribagh district. "The plant started functioning from Monday, and will soon go for commercial production through ONGC ," Shivani Company's Production Manager Neeraj Sharma said here today. Three years ago, the Shivani Company has got contract from the ONGC to explore availability of methane gas at the village, he said and added the ONGC has also given contract to his company to explore availability of methane in eight more villages, located near Talaspar. He said the company succeeded in pumping out gas from 1500 metre below the ground. He said 500 to 1000 cubic metre of methane gas at an estimated Rs one lakh was pumped out on the first day, adding the gas was being burnt in order to check pollution as commercial production was yet to start. When the company would be able to pump out 5000 cubic metre methane per day, the plant would be handed over to ONGC, the firm having the original license from the Centre. The Centre had given the license to the ONGC to set up Methane Gas plant at Talaspar after a preliminary survey found plenty of methane gas under Barkagaon Police Station of the district and could be used for commercial purposes. The production engineer of Shivani Company said gas locality was good and could meet the country's gas demand once the ONGC starts commercial sale after laying pipes underground. The first coal-bed methane gas plant had started functioning two years ago at Parbatpur in neighbouring Bokaro district.
