Maruti Suzuki , India’s largest car-making company, is set to make the third addition to its Nexa range with the unwrapping of the Ignis, a compact cross between a hatchback and a sports utility vehicle, later today.

The Ignis, which will be available in four trims spread over petrol and diesel engine options, will battle for market share in the premium compact segment that is fast gaining popularity.

With its high stance and broad front fascia the Ignis appears to be a car big enough to put it in the category of sport utility vehicles. It is in the league of KUV100, the compact SUV from Mahindra & Mahindra launched a year ago.

The Ignis is longer than the KUV100 but it is the Mahindra which is slightly taller and wider than the Maruti. The Ignis is built on a completely new platform like the Baleno and is expected to host future Maruti products as well.

The Baleno platform itself will host the all-new Swift and Swift Dzire to be launched in 2017-18.

Ignis’s new platform is lighter, offers better stability and superior fuel efficiency. It is also one of the first Marutis to get the Apple CarPlay and the Android auto support.

It will also be amongst the first Maruti models to come with dual airbags and anti-lock braking system as standard features. Toyota and Volkswagen are already offering these safety features as standard across all models.

A fully loaded variant of the Ignis sold in Europe has been awarded a five-star rating by the Euro NCAP, a renowned testing agency.

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis will be offered with a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine and a 1.3-litre diesel. Both engines will come with the option of auto gear shift.

The wait to buy the Ignis might become a spoiler for customers as the waiting for the petrol variant is already stretching to 4-6 weeks while that for the diesel variant it is 8-10 weeks. This is even as Maruti is putting the construction of the Gujarat plant (owned by parent Suzuki Motor Corporation) on the fast track.

Meanwhile, launched in January 2016 the going has been tough for the Mahindra KUV100 as it has become the most heavily discounted vehicle in the company’s line-up.

A company consumer benefit of Rs 70,000 is offered on the KUV100, higher than discounts offered on other M&M products like the Scorpio and TUV300 and XUV500.

Ex-showroom prices of Ignis are likely to be in the range of Rs 4.5 lakh-Rs 7 lakh.
