Keeping the young as its primary target Maruti Suzuki , India’s largest passenger car maker, on Friday launched the much-awaited premium urban compact vehicle Ignis priced at an introductory price of Rs 4.59 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

While petrol variants of the compact vehicle will be priced up to Rs 6.3 lakh, diesel variants range between Rs 6.39 lakh and Rs 7.46 lakh. Petrol-based automatic variants of the Ignis are priced at Rs 5.74 lakh and Rs 6.3 lakh while diesel-run automatic units will cost Rs 6.94 lakh and Rs 7.46 lakh.

The Ignis, which is a cross between a hatchback and a sports utility vehicle, has created a new segment within the larger crossover category that has recently witnessed launches like the Toyota Etios Cross and Hyundai i20 Active.

“NEXA, our premium automotive retail channel, now has the IGNIS. It combines unconventional design, seamless smartphone experience with AndroidAuto and Apple CarPlay, technological supremacy with AGS on petrol and diesel, advanced safety features as standard and personalization options, making it unique on every parameter. IGNIS at NEXA will help us expand our presence in the premium compact segment,” Kenichi Ayukawa, Managing Director and Chief Executive at Maruti Suzuki said, in a statement said.

Next-gen interactive platforms like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both of which are fast gaining ground in the Indian automotive space, has been extended to the Ignis too to appeal to the youth.

Ignis is the first car in the Maruti Suzuki portfolio to offer Android Auto feature, expanding smartphone connectivity to Android users. Android Auto allows users to control the multimedia functions via voice commands. It helps users get directions, make calls, send and receive messages, listen to music and audio books through a remarkable touch interface. Android Auto also helps in getting real time traffic update via Google Navigation and access to other supported Apps.

Ignis is built on a completely new generation rigid platform. The company, along with its suppliers, has invested over Rs 950 crore towards development of the car. Ignis comes with a 98.5 percent localisation.

The car comes equipped with dual airbags, seatbelts with pre-tensioner force limiter (PTFL) and ABS with EBD as standard fitments. It is only the third car from the company under the Nexa banner to have airbags and ABS as standard after S-Cross and Baleno.

A fully-loaded variant of the Ignis sold in Europe has been awarded a five-star rating by the Euro NCAP, a renowned testing agency.

The wait to buy the Ignis might become a spoiler for customers as the waiting for the petrol variant is already stretching to 4-6 weeks while that for the diesel variant it is 8-10 weeks.

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis will be offered with a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine and a 1.3-litre diesel. Both engines will be offered with the option of auto gear shift.

With its high stance and broad front fascia, the Ignis appears as a big car enough to put it in the category of sport utility vehicles — such as KUV100, the compact SUV from Mahindra & Mahindra.

The Ignis is longer than the KUV100 but it is the M&M model which is slightly taller and wider than the Maruti's unit. The Ignis is built on a completely new platform like the Baleno and is expected to host future Maruti products as well.

Launched in January 2016, the going has been tough for the Mahindra product as it has been the most heavily discounted vehicle in the company’s line-up.

A company consumer benefit of Rs 70,000 is offered on the KUV100, higher than discounts offered on other M&M products like the Scorpio and TUV300 and XUV500.
