Temasek bullish on sectors linked to consumption in India: Ravi Lambah

The house is also upbeat on pharma and healthcare sector, healthcare is linked to consumption and pharma is a long-term play, said Ravi Lambah, Joint Head-India, Temasek.

Temasek's Ravi Lambah said the house is bullish on all sectors that are driven by consumption theme in India.

In an interview to CNBC-TV18's Nisha Poddar, the joint-head of India said the financial sector is at the heart of consumption theme. So, as long as the view on consumption growth is positive, the view on sectors linked to that is also positive, he said.

He said, amongst the financials, HDFC is where they increased their stake last year. Financials is also a sector that is linked to India’s growth.

The Singapore based marquee private equity firm has USD 200 billion of assets under management (AUMs) and has USD 10 billion invested in India currently.

When asked what his view on the IDFC-Shriram Group merger was as a minority shareholder, he said since they have no preview information being a small shareholder, they would take a view on whether to increase the stake or not, when the companies decide to merger because merger is the function of determining what the consolidated company looks like.

With regards to their telecom investments, he said these were done at time when the industry was very different but it has changed a lot now, adding that if there is an exit at the right time then they would look at it.

The house is also upbeat on pharma and healthcare sector, he said because they play into different themes of the economy – healthcare plays well into consumption theme, so positively inclined towards it. Pharma is a long-term play, he added.
