Larsen & Toubro Heavy Engineering has opened a Rs 300-crore hi-tech manufacturing facility in Sohar, Oman.

This will strengthen its existing modular fabrication facility focused on the hydrocarbons and power sector in the country.

L&T Heavy Engineering LLC is a joint venture of the Zubair Corporation and the Indian engineering major. L&T now operates four companies in the Sultanate covering sectors including construction, erection of transmission towers, modular fabrication and manufacture of critical equipment for process plants.

An L&T release said the Sohar facility in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) region is the first venture into critical fabrication outside India. The facility has been built by L&T Oman LLC, the first joint venture between L&T and Zubair. Trial production at the unit has begun.

The yard is fully geared for fabrication and will be rolled on to a custom-built barge for onward transportation to Mumbai High North offshore field of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation.

L&T said the Cr-Mo (chromium-molybdenum) reactors for refineries would be built there. Further, the facility would substantially contribute to the SIPC (Sohar Industrial Port Company) area, having recently qualified to make the Cr-Mo-V (chromium- molybdenum- vanadium) reactors.

The built-up space on the seafront is over 12,000 sq.m. on a total area of over 300,000 sq.m.

L&T has also initiated a training programme for Omani youth to be employed at the facility. The first batch of employees has undergone five months training and the selection process for the second group has been completed.
