Building the momentum of the current shipment of Intel-powered classmate PCs to several developing countries, Intel Corporation today announced that these innovative, education-oriented mobile PCs are now being piloted in India. The pilot program is part of Intel's World Ahead Program to tap the combined power of technology, curriculum and teachers to improve education in developing countries.

Classmate PCs are rugged mobile devices that include features that are commonly found in today's mainstream PCs (such as storage and built-in wireless), and thus are capable of running mainstream applications including video and educational software. These fully functional PCs are equipped with unique features such as a water-resistant keyboard, an integrated educational feature set that allows teacher-student and teacher-parent collaboration, and an advanced theft-control feature that uses a network-issued digital certification.

The first pilot program with classmate PCs started four months ago in India with class VI students at DPS Delhi Public School, Ghaziabad, Vasundhara (in New Delhi). Using classmate PCs, these students were able to learn through computers and participate in collaborative activities such as notes sharing, emails, content development and other innovative educational exercises.

To further accelerate access to uncompromised technology and education for students in India, Intel is also joining hand with Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), an autonomous organization under India's Department of Education. The collaboration supports NVS' goals of introducing students to computers in the classroom to enable interactive education . As part of the collaboration, Intel is donating 60 classmate PCs to class VII students at NVS Mothuka, Faridabad to enable students to use PCs to improve their learnings.  The pilot in this school is expected to take place in late Q2 or early Q3 this year.

Intel-powered classmate PCs are already being shipped in volume to countries such as Brazil and Mexico and Intel plans to run pilot programs on classmate PCs in more than 25 countries this year. "We are seeing solid momentum and interest from countries around the world in adopting classmate PCs. The pilot programs are showing good results and proving that technology devices supported by teacher's education in technology are helping students to learn better," said Willy Agatstein, vice president for Sales and Marketing Group and general manager for Emerging Markets Platform Group, Intel.
