The Planning Commission is hosting a mega infrastructure conference today. Speaking at the occasion, Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh said that infrastructure in India is a cause for concern, reports CNBC-TV18.
"Most importantly, our growth potential wil be realised only if we can ensure that our infrastructure does not become a severe handicap. The quality and capacity of our infrastructure is certainly a matter of concern," said Dr Manmohan Singh.
Finance Minister, P Chidambaram echoed the Prime Minister's thoughts. He pointed out that the deficiencies in infrastructure are becoming very visible.
"Infrastructure development is essential to sustain high growth rates in future. In fact, the infrastructure deficiencies have become more visible because of high growth," said P Chidambaram.
But how does the country tackle these deficiencies? Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh said more than USD 300 billion of investments is needed during the 11th five year plan.
"The Planning Commission has estimated that investment in infrastructure defined to include road, rail and water transport, will need about Rs 14.5 lakh crore during the 11th five year plan," added the Prime Minister.
