IBM unveils Social Software Platform for businesses

IBM (NYSE: IBM) today made a set of announcements that dramatically expands Lotus' collaboration portfolio for the rapidly growing market. This is one of the most aggressive Lotus software product line ups from IBM and it represents an alternative to other rigid, closed and proprietary offerings in the market. The main announcements include:

 

• IBM Lotus Connections - the industry's first business-ready social software platform
• IBM Lotus Quickr - a brand new Web 2.0 collaborative content platform offering
• IBM Lotus Sametime 7.5.1 - featuring expanded unified communications capabilities and increased interoperability with Microsoft software.
• IBM WebSphere Portal Express Version 6 - a collaborative portal solution specifically designed for SMBs to help them become more productive and responsive.

In addition, IBM demonstrated IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8 and announced the product's open beta program starting this month. The new Lotus Notes client includes major upgrades to core applications and expanded integration with the new collaboration tools announced today.

 

The IBM India Software lab (ISL) has made significant contribution to the development of these new technologies. The high-end product development lab for innovative IBM products & technologies created large components of the new portfolio especially for Lotus Notes 8 and portlet catalogs of business portlets. The India lab has been the lead lab developing the Lotus Sametime 7.5.1 server development on Linux platform.
