IBM will expand operations in Chennai by opening its fourth facility in the city to provide IT services to domestic and international clients.

The new facility at DLF Park in Guindy will be operational in early 2007, with a capacity to house around 3,000 employees, Mr Shanker Annaswamy, Managing Director, IBM India, told newspersons.

The US-based IT company employs some 43,000 people in India. It has offices in 15 cities, including Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi and Mumbai.

Expansion in Chennai was part of the company's $6-billion three-year investment plan announced in June by the Chairman and CEO, Mr Samuel J. Palmisano.

Mr Annaswamy refused to give financial numbers or talk about the company's expansion plans in the country.

IBM has also announced its "Re-inventing Education' programme in India, which focuses on professional development training for teachers to help meet national objectives of education reform.
