GM India signs MoU with Gujarat Govt to train ITI Students

General Motors India and government of Gujarat today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a public-private partnership to train students of the Tarsali Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Vadodara.

 

The agreement was signed by Mr. Sujith Gultati, IAS Industry Commissioner, Mr. C.V. Some, IAS, Director (Employment & Training)  and  Mr. Karl Slym, President and Managing Director of General Motors India  at a function in the presence of the State Industries Minister, Mr. Saurabh  Patel. Among those present on the occasion included Principal Secretary (Industries) Ms. Gauri Kumar, Principal Secretary (Labour & Employment) Mr. R.M. Patel, and host of officials  from ITI, the Government of Gujarat and GM India.

 

According to the MOU, GM India would develop and provide technical courses on automotive technology through Tarsali ITI.  The courses would leverage GM's global resources and take advantage of expertise at GM's manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat, and the GM Technical Center in Bangalore.  GM India would also contribute to upgrading the existing infrastructure at the institute and assist in providing other course-related facilities.   

 

Speaking on the occasion, the State Industries Minister Mr. Saurabh Patel  said, "With the massive inflow of investment in industrial and infrastructure projects in recent years, a large pool of industry responsive talented manpower is required at different levels.  The program we are announcing today would help provide the skills required to ensure that Gujarat remains a favorable destination for domestic and foreign investors."

 

"The automotive industry is one of the key drivers of Gujarat's economy," said Mr. Karl Slym.  "Our public-private partnership would enable us to share the cost required for upgrading facilities for introducing new courses, providing training to students, and assisting

 

in designing the course content and securing external faculty.  We would also sponsor trainees as apprentices in our organization."  Mr. Slym said  "Today's MOU is an extension of GM's long-term commitment to the state of Gujarat and its government.  GM India believes in working with the government to spread awareness of issues that are in the public's interest and have an impact on the state's development." 

 

With a view to building awareness for value-added tax (VAT) system, GM India had earlier associated with Gujarat's Commercial Tax Department and offered GM vehicles as the prize for the winners of the schemes launched by the department. 

 

GM India has been in the forefront of corporate social responsibility (CSR).  It has provided relief to victims of natural disasters, helped renovate and repair homes of those in need, and carried out health-care and health education programs.  GM India is also in discussion with the Health and Welfare Department of Gujarat to support and run a referral hospital in Halol.In addition, it has promoted environmental protection through programs aimed at reducing energy and water consumption, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, eliminating waste, promoting recycling and investigating the use of bio-diesel fuel.
