GM India sales jump by 9% in September 2006

General Motors India has registered a 9% growth in September 2006 as compared to the same period last year. GM India sold 3506 units in September 2006 as against 3220 cars in the same month last year to record a growth of 9% in monthly sales. The September 2006 sales comprise of 2222 units of Chevrolet Tavera, 421 units of Chevrolet Optra and 863 units of Chevrolet Aveo.

Chevrolet Tavera achieved a landmark by clocking the highest ever monthly sales of 2222 units marking a 39% year on year growth over September 2005 where it sold 1600 units.

Said Mr. P. Balendran, Vice President, General Motors India, "The sales of the Chevrolet Tavera have been overwhelming by registering an all time monthly high of 2222 units. The sales of other Chevrolet brands, the Aveo and the Optra, and the initial response we are getting from our newly launched Chevrolet SRV are also in line with our expectations and we are quite optimistic about the similar kind of response from our customers, going forward."

The Chevrolet brand is steadily gaining popularity and has clocked a year-on-year growth of 43%. During September 2005, GMI sold 2455 units of Chevrolet brand of vehicles as compared of 3506 units in September 2006.

Gearing up for a major ramp up, General Motors India's Halol facility in Gujarat is undergoing an expansion drive to enhance its capacity to 85,000 units by the end of this year to cater to the increased market demand for Chevrolet brand of vehicles.  

GM India is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation.  Besides the Chevrolet Optra, GM India manufactures the Chevrolet Tavera, Chevrolet SRV and Chevrolet Aveo at its state-of-the-art facility in Halol, Gujarat.
