Riding high on the unprecedented launch of three new Chevrolet models during 2006, General Motors India maintained encouraging growth by clocking sales of 35823 units in calendar year 2006 as against 30837 units sales during 2005, thus marking an annual growth of 16.2%.
During December 2006, GM India has registered 19.4% growth in sales as compared to the same period last year. It sold 2583 units in December 2006 as against 2163 units during December 2005. The December sales comprise of 1517 units of Chevrolet Tavera, 759 units of Chevrolet Aveo and 307 units of Chevrolet Optra.
“2006 has been a very memorable year for GM India which marked the greatest product offensive in the company’s history as the Chevrolet Indian Revolution picked up momentum. We have introduced three outstanding new Chevrolet cars – the Aveo, SRV and Aveo U-VA – in the process more than doubling our Chevrolet lineup 2006. This has resulted in Chevrolet emerging as one of fastest-growing vehicle brands in India,” said Mr. P Balendran, Vice President, GM India, about the company’s impressive performance in 2006.
“To ensure that we can keep up with long-term demand for our products, we have started expanding the capacity of our existing manufacturing facility in Halol to 85,000 units and have also started construction of a new Greenfield manufacturing plant at Talegaon in Maharashtra. The new facility, which is scheduled to open in the last quarter of 2008, will more than double our vehicle manufacturing capacity. This is essential for GM India to become a volume player in the Indian auto market and to achieve our mission of capturing 10 percent market share by 2010. To make 2007 an even more eventful year, GM India is working on several programmes that will enable it to launch more new models and exciting marketing initiatives,” added Mr. Balendran.
GM India is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation. In addition to the Chevrolet Aveo U-Va, Chevrolet Aveo and the Chevrolet SRV, GM India also manufactures the Chevrolet Tavera and Chevrolet Optra at its facility in Halol, Gujarat.
