Global Institute of Intellectual Property (GIIP) today announced the launch of its unique flagship Postgraduate Diploma Program in Patents and Intellectual Property (IP) services. GIIP's full-time 9-month (tri-semester) post graduate diploma program will commence from August 2007, and is designed for graduates and post-graduates (B.Sc./B.Tech., M.Sc./M.Tech., Ph.D.) in engineering, bio-technology,  Pharma and other technical fields, and legal professionals (LL.B. & LL.M.) with technical background.

The GIIP program offering will be the first of its kind in the world to train professionals for the rapidly growing global patent and IP services business. Recently, GIIP, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi successfully completed a 6-week certificate course on Patents & Intellectual Property Services, which received overwhelming response.

The Legal and Intellectual Property (IP) services industry in India is expected to account for a significant portion of the growth in outsourcing business. Driven by escalating costs in the US and Europe, the legal and IP outsourcing business is poised to grow in India. According to National Association of Software and Services Companies ( NASSCOM ) it is estimated to reach $4 billion by 2015

"We believe that GIIP will prepare the students for attractive career opportunities in patent drafting, prosecution and IP generally, as some of the best US IP practitioners and experts trained in the US will be conducting the courses" said senior Advisor to GIIP, Dr. V S Ramamurthy, former Secretary Govt. of India, Department of Science and Technology.

While announcing the program, Mr. Atulya Nath, President, GIIP, stated "Our aim is to develop high caliber professionals in India to serve global customers in the field of IP and Patents and establish a new career stream for a large number of high quality technical and legal professionals,"

The GIIP team consists of successful IP practitioners, entrepreneurs, US Attorneys, and technical trainers who are guided by senior experts. Chairman and Mentor of GIIP, Dr. Kailash Joshi, former IBM executive and co-Founder of The Indus Entrepreneurs ( www.tie.org ) said "We are pleased that we have architected a very strong training program for India that will be conducted by distinguished IP professionals and trainers. Our vision is to expand the program to several cities in India and other countries, including the US"

The GIIP curriculum has been developed by Steve Shear, Ex- Examiner United States Patent & Trade-mark Office (USPTO) and Founder of Silicon Valley Seminars, Ms. Girija Varma, IP & Patents Attorney and Fellow, Stanford Law School and Mr. Firasat Ali, a practicing IP Attorney in the US. The course content will include several IP topics that are designed to provide an overall understanding of various types of IP.  In parallel, courses such as the study of English legal writing, presentation and requisite computer skills designed to make a student well-rounded will also be provided.

Girija Varma, Senior Advisor and Curriculum Co-chair at GIIP states "The course content is comprehensive as it covers prior art searches, patent claims drafting, patent portfolio management, patent prosecution, valuation of IP and licensing etc.  Lectures will be delivered through classroom instructions, on-line e-learning modules, and mentoring sessions.," The mentoring sessions during the third trimester of the course will be an unique feature of learning the IP practice" says Ms. Varma.

"The opportunity for training of IP professionals is related to the need for high quality training programs and institutions in India. Given the size of outsourcing opportunities, India becomes the ideal location for the start of such a global training institution" added Prof. S.K. Jain, Department of Management Studies, at IIT Delhi.

The 9-month (tri-semester) post graduate diploma program includes series of books and manuals to be published by GIIP under license from Silicon Valley Seminars (SVS) Inc., as well as the following advisers, mentors and key faculty members of GIIP.
