Despite sluggish market conditions and rising fuel prices, General Motors India has registered a commendable sales growth of 25% percent in July 2008, compared to the corresponding period last year, riding high on the success of its mini-car, Chevrolet Spark. It sold 5706 units in July 2008 as against 4570 units during the same time last year. General Motors India’s July 2008 sales comprise of 3570 units of the Chevrolet Spark, 921 units of the Chevrolet Tavera, 501 units of the Chevrolet Aveo, 344 units of the Chevrolet Optra, and 370 units of the Chevrolet Captiva.
The monthly surge in sales figures is primarily driven by the Chevrolet Spark, which has emerged as a great value for money proposition for India. The Spark has seen a phenomenal sales growth of 120 percent this month in India.
The month of July has also seen the Chevrolet Captiva, which was launched in January this year, emerging as the clear market leader in the fiercely fought premium SUV segment, reiterating the strong product and brand attributes that Chevrolet products enjoy in India today.
Commenting on the robust sales performance, Mr. P Balendran, Vice President, GM India said, “Despite a sluggish market, our positive monthly sales figure is a clear indication of the success of our carlines. The Chevrolet Spark has made serious inroads in the Indian small car segment and is emerging as the most preferred vehicle in this segment. Due to the ever increasing demand for our Chevrolet brand of vehicles, our network expansion drive is in full swing and we aim to set up a total of 190 sales and an equal number of service outlets across the country by the end of this year”.
General Motors India is a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation, with a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat. The company makes the Chevrolet Tavera, Chevrolet Optra, Chevrolet Aveo, Chevrolet Aveo U-VA, Chevrolet Optra SRV and Chevrolet Captiva for the Indian market.
