Essar Energy today said it has commissioned the second 600-MW unit of its Salaya power project in Gujarat. " It has commenced commercial operations at the 600-MW unit 2 of its 1,200 MW Salaya I power project in Gujarat," the Essar Group company said in a statement.

The commercial operations of the first 600 MW unit of Salaya project started in April, this year. This takes Essar Energy's total installed operational generation capacity to 2,800 MW, it added.

The project has been built at a total investment cost of USD 1.1 billion (Rs 6,100 crore approximately). Most of the power produced will be sold to the Gujarat state electricity utility, GUVNL, under a long-term contract.

"The commissioning of the second unit at Salaya is welcome news and represents further evidence of this progress," Naresh Nayyar, the chief executive officer of Essar Energy.
