ESPN Star Sports has bagged the ICC global telecast rights for the next 8 years from 2007 to 2015, reports CNBC-TV18.
It has won the media rights for a whopping USD 1.1 billion outbidding Nimbus, Zee TV and Ten Sports. The main events for which ESPN Star Sports has won the bid include two ICC Cricket World Cups, 18 ICC tournaments and a minimum of three ICC Champions tournaments.
RC Venkatesh, MD of ESPN-Star Sports says he forsees an increase in demand for cricket telecast rights in India.
"Valuations are very reasonable, given the potential cricket has, and the rate at which the economy is growing and foreseen to grow the next 8 to 10 years. These rights are for long term duration, that is eight years for 2007 to 2015. The kind of growth the economy is facing, I think you would see a tremendous surge in premium products," said Venkatesh.
