EMCO Ltd., one of the leading Indian manufacturing companies in Power Transmission and Distribution sector, had recently organized a Technology Meet under the umbrella of its International Advisory Board on Technology (IABT) as part of continuous Technology upgradation process at EMCO and in order to formulate long time business strategy for future technology developments.

An International Advisory Board on Technology (IABT) has been created by EMCO with distinguished experts in different areas of power system engineering on its panel to keep abreast of the latest technology development trends across the globe in the various fields in T&D sector and help formulate its business strategy as per market needs. The most eminent experts from different countries like Russia, USA, Romania, Canada and India represent EMCO's IABT. Each expert has his own area of expertise in Power Systems and Power Electronics. IABT has a pivotal role in guiding EMCO in formulating its technology development strategy and steer the company towards global technology leadership in the field of Power Systems in general, but with special reference to Application of Power Electronics in Power System Elements (viz. Transformers, Electronic Intelligent Meters, Power Quality Devices, and Energy Savers etc.).

While commenting on two days IABT meet Mr. Rajesh Jain, Chairman, EMCO Limited said, "The experts had the opportunity to have a close look at the technology status of the Indian Power Industry at the ELECRAMA Exhibition. They had elaborate interactions with various industry experts. With the experts now having a clear picture of Indian power growth plans and the preparedness of the Indian industry to carry forward these plans, IABT experts reviewed and deliberated on the initiatives taken at EMCO. They also deliberated on the technology trends the world over."

"From the deliberations, one thing that emerged out, among other issues, was that Power Quality is one of the important issues in India today. The experts therefore emphasized the need for special focus on developing the devices that would ensure electrical power quality to the consumers, that has great influence on safety, reliability and economy of the power supply and power use. Harmonics, voltage fluctuations, inrush currents, voltage transients, flicker, sag and swell, load imbalance etc are some of the main factors that influence the Power Quality," said Mr. Jain.

EMCO is already working on development of such devices. One of the latest devices have been commercialized by EMCO is 'Power Quality Conditioner (PQC)' at low voltage up to 700 volts AC, with wide range of harmonic current capacity from 25 A to 1200 A, to meet domestic as well as industry needs. This device removes harmonics generated by non-linear electronic loads, such as AC & DC drives, rectifiers & computer loads. With the removal of harmonics, the current drawn from the AC source is reduced and it attains sinusoidal shape, leading to power factor improvement. It also helps to maintain a balanced load.

The benefits, the utilities derive from PQC are reduced T&D losses, improvement of power factor, removal of harmonics, enhancement of equipment life, dynamic & stepless reactive & harmonic power compensation. The benefits the user avails by using PQC are availing PF incentive, increased productivity, energy saving, arresting failure of sensitive electronic components in non-linear loads. And many other new products are in the offing, which would benefit the industry as well as the utilities.

Taking note of the overall recommendations of IABT, in his concluding note, the EMCO Chairman Mr. Rajesh Jain complemented the IABT experts for helping EMCO in identifying the areas for future technology developments, symbolizing EMCO's vision that would go a long way in keeping EMCO on the fast growth trajectory and supporting sustainable growth of the Indian Power Sector.

In order to give a focused attention to R&D activities and stay abreast in technology developments to address future requirements, EMCO has in place a Government of India approved R&D Centre and a dedicated Technology Development Group.

T&D is EMCO's core business segment and EMCO is poised to play its role in the national T&D growth strategy.
