Elder Pharmaceuticals Ltd has entered into an alliance with Spain's Laboratorios Farmaceuticos Rovi SA to market advanced heparins or anti-thrombotics in India for treatment and prevention of diseases like deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

Heparins are used as anti-coagulants to prevent blood from clotting.

Joint Initiative

Laboratorios Farmaceuticos Rovi SA is a 100-million research-backed pharmaceutical company that invests 18 per cent of its turnover in research.

The joint initiative between the two companies will see the introduction of Bemiparin in India - the patented, second-generation heparin used in the prevention and treatment of thrombo-embolic venous diseases - a note from the company said.

In India, Bemiparin is likely to be launched in a couple of months under the HIBOR brandname, and the price of the medicine would be firmed-up then, an industry representative familiar with the development said.

The total anti-thrombotic market in India is estimated to be about Rs 130 crore with products largely from multinational companies including Sanofi-Aventis and Novartis , the note added.
