In what may come as a big sigh of relief for the entire telecom sector, an inter-ministerial panel will be set up to examine the financial woes of the telecom sector, which saw a dip of close to 79 percent in net profit in recent quarters.
According to sources, the main aim of the panel will be to suggest measures to reduce financial stress of the telecom sector. The panel may review aspects like reducing license fee and spectrum usage charges paid by the telcos.
The panel might also decide on relaxation of deferred payment of spectrum dues, reports CNBC-TV18’s Prerna Baruah.
Sources also suggest that the panel has already been approved by a group of secretaries and will consist of Additional Secretary level officers of Department of Telecom (DoT) and Joint Secretary level officers of Finance Ministry. It is also learnt that the panel will take views from the telecom industry, banks and foreign investors and recommendations by the panel will be sent to Telecom Commission for the final approval.
