National Health Policy: Hospitals can become huge job creators, says Biocon Chief

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the National Health Policy 2017 which aims to increase public healthcare expenditure to 2.5 percent of GDP with more than two-thirds of those resources going towards primary healthcare.

The policy is expected to reach healthcare to all corners of the country, particularly the underserved and underprivileged.

Medanta Medicity CMD lauded the government’s efforts saying the objectives envisaged are good. This policy should actually promote elimination of barriers to good healthcare without having to spend a penny from citizens’ pockets, he said.

Private sector companies will come on board once the policy is rolled out, he added.

Seconding his views, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw Chairperson and managing director, Biocon Hospitals, said hospitals can be huge job creators.

The policy aims to ensure availability of 2 beds per 1000 population distributed in a manner to enable access within golden hour.

She said addressing the opportunity for 2 million hospital beds can generate 6 million jobs.

Stressing the need for a strong PPP policy, she said the healthcare machinery can’t work in silos.
