Travel firm Cox & Kings India has launched a luxury train tour service 'Maharajas' Express' in collaboration with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC). The train has 23 coaches with a passenger capacity of 84. It offers four 11-night itineraries between Mumbai-Delhi, Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Kolkata and Kolkata-Delhi.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Peter Kerkar, Executive Director, Cox & Kings India spoke about the new service and gave a perspective on the road ahead for the travel business.

Here is a verbatim transcript of the interview. Also watch the accompanying video.

Q: We understand a luxury train service, 'Maharajas' Express' that has kick started this month, tell us what percentage of your entire revenue comes from this luxury segment and how much of an augmentation do you think this would have now that this train service has started?

A: We have done our first trial run on the Maharajas' Express and we continue to do a couple more before we are absolutely certain that it represents the standard that we wish it to have, which is the most luxurious train in the world.

Cox & Kings has traditionally always been positioned at the top end of the market. As we try and strive to offer seven star products at five star pricing. So if you analyze our entire book whether it'd be our clients from Tokyo or London or the US or our Indian clients, we are always targeting the top end of the market and the highest end of the value chain.

So I would have to say that almost 100% of our market comes from the top end of the luxury market rates including in India. This is very much part of our integral product offering.
