While the country was sleeping, there was a change of guard at the busiest airports. Delhi was taken over by the GMR led consortium and Mumbai by GVK. So what can you expect? CNBC-TV18 gets you a ground check.
This new facade will give Delhi's busy domestic airport a facelift. There are measured changes, the new traffic flow pattern is designed by IIT. At the helm of things, Chairman of GMR, hopes to make each one comfortable. But there are challenges.
Chairman at GMR, GM Rao says, "The way the traffic is growing there will be congestion. Till the new terminal is built we will have to work around it."
Traffic will remain congested until new terminals and parallel runways are built. But such concrete changes will be seen only by 2010. Till then, expect cosmetic ones.
The new management will focus on 5 T's. Get rid of Touts, more Trolleys for passengers, Cleaner Toilets, better Traffic flow, and more Ticketing counters.
Passengers are looking forward to the change. Both companies have a tough task ahead. Apart from investing in infrastructure they will also have to keep the 5000 odd employees passed on from Airports Authority in good humour.
Despite the Airport Unions opposing the privatisation the 3 month transition period has been smooth. With the complete takeover from midnight Wednesday, the clock has started ticking.
