Ever spent a few minutes in an IT company in the electronics city in Bangalore , the Hi-tech city in Hyderabad or the Cybergreens in Gurgaon on the outskirts of Delhi.

The first few minutes of eye gazing are enough to convince you that the ever youthful IT professional is in her 20s. If you are good at face reading, you may even be able to make out that two out of three IT professionals walking in and out of the hallowed portals of the sun-rise industry were promoted less than a year ago.

The findings of the 2nd online survey of 1886 respondents from amongst 350,000 members enrolled on CyberMedia Dice, a dedicated technology job site, are an eye opener even to the 1.1 million IT professionals in India . The highlights are:

  • Nearly 63% of the IT professionals have less than 5 years of work experience in IT or IT related field
  • More than 75% of the professionals have been with their current employer for less than 2 years, indicating that the IT industry has one of the most mobile work force
  • More than 70% of the IT professionals have been promoted in the last one year.
  • The job seeking IT professionals are a highly satisfied and committed lot with a quarter of them having a TRI*M Index above 70 while the all India mean for all employees (across all sectors) is only 62. The TRI*M Index is a measure of strength of the 'employee-employer relationship'
  • 60% of the respondents have posted resumes on job portals, even though they are happy and committed showing that they are shopping around for the best deal in town for someone with their skills sets and experience
  • Growth offered by a company is found to be the most important determinant of employee motivation and commitment, according to the survey, while the salary does not have much of an impact on motivation or commitment.

The survey was carried by the Indian arm of the world's largest custom research agency, TNS. The agency deployed its globally accepted proprietary TRI*M model (pronounced Tri M) for measuring, managing and monitoring stakeholder relationships. This system has been used by TNS worldwide to understand what drives relationships across stakeholder groups including employees, channel partners and customers.
