After Swaraj cracks whip, Amazon pulls out tri-colour doormats

At a time when Amazon is betting big on India and has plans to invest more than USD 5 billion, a controversy over selling doormats resembling the Indian tri-color flag on its site could prove a dampener for the company. Vehement response of Indian citizens forced the company to halt the sale of the doormats.

At a time when Amazon is betting big on India and has plans to invest more than USD 5 billion, a controversy over selling doormats resembling the Indian tri-color flag on its site could prove a dampener for the company.

The e-commerce giant has halted the sale of these products on Wednesday, reports Reuters. The product was sold by a third-party on Amazon's Canadian portal and was described as "personalised durable machine-washable indoor/outdoor items".

These doormats on sale made Indians furious and the tweeple were quick to show their resentment. Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj took to Twitter to express her exasperation and threatened that India would rescind current visas for Amazon officials and not grant any more. She also demanded an unconditional apology from Amazon.

The matter was brought to Swaraj's attention by a Twitter user and she has asked the Indian High Commission in Canada to take up the issue with Amazon.

This is not the first time Amazon is in the eye of a storm. Last June the company found itself surrounded in a similar controversy over sales of doormats illustrating Hindu gods.
