On Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise development and Clusters, Dr Reddy said that already over 100 firms benefiting from CII SME Cluster initiatives in the Southern Region. CII-SR will launch six new cluster projects in 2008-09 in Visakhapatnam, Trichy, Bangalore, Chennai, Hosur and Kochi. He said that CII has taken up power reforms in Southern States and consolidation of GST by 2010 as the short and medium-term policy related issues. With the thrust to enhance agricultural productivity, CII is drawing synergistic linkages amongst manufacturing and engineering services; strives for mechanization of farm practices and development of rural business hubs/farmer-industry partnerships. Dr Reddy also announced that CII will kick start a project for competency assessment of colleges in Tamil Nadu. It will launch College Excellence Clusters to enhance quality of education and conduct train the trainers programme for faculty members on specific industry requirement. CII - Southern Region has recently signed a MoU with UNIDO to promote MSMEs in the Auto Components sector to enhance their global competitiveness. The CII - EU Investment Facilitation Desk in Chennai will continue to promote trade and investment between India and European Union. CII is developing trade and business relationship between Southern India and Sri Lanka through CII-SAARC project. He said that some of the CII's corporate social responsibility projects include: CII-UNDP-BYST mentoring program for PLHIVA (People living with HIV/AIDS), Anti Trafficking initiative in partnership with industry and government, Work place interventions on HIV/AIDS in partnership with APAC & APSACS and Doora-Model Village Project near Mysore to improve the overall quality of the life of the community.
