The Confederation of Indian Industry  (CII) supports the enhanced engagement by members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and looks forward to a successful meeting of trade ministers from G 4 and G 6 countries in New Delhi.

CII is committed to a development friendly outcome from the Doha negotiations.  Mr R Seshasayee, President CII is of the view that member countries can ensure such an outcome by adopting a firm pro-development stand and insisting that the mandate contained in the Doha Declaration, July framework and the Hong Kong declaration, which are all consensus based documents, are fully respected.

Mr Seshasayee fully endorsed the consistent stand taken by the Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Kamal Nath, that the content of the outcome of Doha Round is even more important than the formal completion of the Round and that India will contribute substantially to the successful conclusion of the ongoing negotiations.

Mr Seshasayee urged the trade ministers to build the developmental concerns into every subject under negotiations, be it Market Access or Rules.

On Agriculture, Mr Seshasayee is of the view that disciplines under three pillars namely export subsidy, domestic support, and tariffs, are inter-related.  Developing countries like India, have to necessarily depend upon the tariff mechanism and other associated instrumentalities like Special Products to protect their agriculture against subsidized imports.
