The week-long Auto Expo 2018 culminated on Wednesday after witnessing over 100 product unveilings from 53 manufacturers across segments, making the biennial event the largest of its kind in the world.

Although there was a significant drop in participation from companies for the event this year, there was, however, no let off in the number of new product unveilings done by companies.

The 2016 edition of the event saw 108 new product launches across categories.

The Motor Show 2018 witnessed over 500 product displays from 119 exhibitors. This included 53 Original Vehicle Manufacturers showcasing over 100 products, included 22 launches, 81 product unveilings and 18 concept showcases.

There were 14 new brand launches that included Kia Motors India, India Kawasaki Motors and Cleveland CycleWerks. There were 25 Electric Vehicles showcased too and a total of 11 start-ups marked presence in India through this edition.

At 6.05 lakh footfalls, this edition of the Expo was on par with the previous edition when a similar number of visitors had attended the event. The entire Volkswagen group comprising 8 brands, Triumph, Jaguar Land Rover, General Motors, Fiat, Harley Davidson, Ford and Nissan, all of whom had participated in the previous edition of the Expo turned down the opportunity this time.

With the exception of the Maruti Suzuki Swift, Hyundai Elite i20, Mercedes Maybach S650, BMW 6 Series GT and BMW M5, there were no other commercial launches at the Expo. A lot of focus was on future, clean emission technology such as hybrids, electric and fuel cell. Almost every company showcased at least one fully electric product to demonstrate its technological strength. Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors displayed six electric vehicles each at their pavilion.

Sugato Sen, Deputy Director General, SIAM said, “The successful completion of the Auto Expo is a great achievement for the industry. We had 605,175 footfalls during this edition as was expected. The extension of the Auto Expo by one day has been welcomed by visitors and manufacturers alike. It helped us manage the crowd efficiently, use the infrastructure optimally with no bottlenecks on roads and parking. The feedback received from all quarters has been positive and has been a wonderful experience for all which was one of the key objectives of the Motor Show.”

Much like the previous editions, this year saw participation of glitterati, including sports personalities. Shah Rukh Khan, John Abraham, Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Taapsee Pannu, Gul Panag, Rahul Khanna, and stand-up comedian Kanan Gill were seen at various launches. Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Former Indian Captain Mohammad Azharuddin, Gautam Gambhir and Indian seamer RP Singh also launched vehicles at the Auto Expo.
