Digitisation deadline may be extended by atleast three-four months. Information and Broadcast Ministry is expected to make an announcement early next week, reports CNBC-TV18 quoting sources.

New I&B notification may extend deadline to October 28. Phase I was to cover four metros by June 30. Nearly 12.3 million set-top boxes (STBs) were required in phase I. Multi system operators had sought extension from I&B Ministry saying barely 25% of STBs were seeded so far.

The cable companies have clearly said that they won’t be able to complete the digitisation process for phase I by June 30 simply because of the logistical inabilities that they are facing at this point in time.

The simple logistical inabilities deal with consumers who are facing some amount of resistance in terms of transferring to a set-top box or digitisation. Also convincing the local cable operators at this point in time also seems to be a problem for them.
